A technician must remove a centre console whose mounting screws are hidden under a snap-in plastic cover plate held by three clips. How should the cover plate be released?

  1. Pry gently with a plastic trim tool next to the first clip, then move along and release each remaining clip in turnAnswer
  2. Pry up at the centre of the plate with a flat screwdriver, between the clips, so that all three clips release together in one pull
  3. Heat the plate with a heat gun until the clips soften, then pull it off
  4. Drill out the clips and secure the plate with adhesive on reassembly

Why that is right

Pull force must be applied at or next to each clip, one at a time, with a non-marring trim tool; this frees the clip without flexing the plate. Prying away from a clip bends the plastic, leaves white stretch marks or cracks it.

Why the other options are wrong

  • B. Prying between clips bows the plate and the clips hold; the plate cracks or stretches and a screwdriver gouges the console.
  • C. Heat distorts the plate and the console finish; clips do not need softening.
  • D. Destroying the clips and gluing the plate makes the console unserviceable and is not an OEM-type repair.

A rear bench seat cushion is retained by spring clips rather than screws. How is the cushion installed so that the clips engage?

  1. Hook the rear edge first, then pull the front edge forward and up by hand until the clips snap in
  2. Slide it in from the side door opening until it locks
  3. Tighten the front retaining screws until the cushion stops moving
  4. Position the cushion, then push it down and back with the knee or palm until the clips snap inAnswer

Why that is right

Spring-clip rear cushions are placed in position and then pushed down and back with firm palm or knee pressure until the clips engage. Removal is the reverse: push down and back to free the clips, then lift.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A. Pulling forward and up is the wrong direction; it is how a cushion is lifted out after the clips are freed, not how it is engaged.
  • B. Rear cushions are not slid in sideways; they drop into place from above.
  • C. This cushion has no screws; screws at the front lower edge are the other common method, not this one.
