A door glass with a plastic edge retainer is being installed. After the glass is in the frame and bolted to the regulator, how is the retainer seated in the run channel?
- Tap the top edge of the glass with a rubber mallet, working along the edge until the retainer drops into the channel
- Run the window up under motor power until the retainer clicks into the run channel by itself
- Pull the glass straight back toward the rear of the vehicle with firm, square hand pressure, never at an angleAnswer
- Apply urethane to the retainer and let it cure in place
Why that is right
The retainer snaps into the run channel when the glass is pulled rearward; it can take considerable effort, so the push must be straight. Pushing at an angle concentrates the load on one corner of the tempered glass and can break it.
Why the other options are wrong
- A. Hammering any edge of tempered glass, even with a mallet, risks dicing the pane.
- B. Motor force is applied in the wrong direction (up) and cannot seat a rearward-engaging retainer; stalling the motor can also strip the regulator.
- D. The retainer is a mechanical snap fit; adhesive would glue the glass in the channel and prevent later service.
