A technician has to carry a live side-curtain air bag module from a vehicle in the tear-down bay to the parts storage area. Which carrying practice is correct?

  1. Carry it by the wiring pigtail so the housing is not touched
  2. Hold it so the bag and trim cover point away from the body and never carry it by the wires or connectorAnswer
  3. Hold the bag side against the chest so it cannot be dropped
  4. Short the two connector pins together with a jumper wire so it cannot fire while being carried

Why that is right

A live module is carried with the bag and trim cover pointed away from the technician, so an accidental deployment inflates away from the body with minimal chance of injury. It is never carried by the wires or the connector.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A. Carrying by the pigtail stresses the squib circuit and risks dropping the module.
  • C. Held against the chest, a deployment drives the bag and housing straight into the technician.
  • D. Technicians do not tamper with squib circuits; jumpering the pins is not an OEM practice and does nothing about mechanical shock.

A unibody vehicle is anchored with four pinch weld clamps and the first light pull has just been completed. What should be done to the anchoring before the next pull is made?

  1. Release all anchor chains so the body can relax and settle, then re-measure before continuing
  2. Recheck and re-tighten the anchor clamps, which may have rotated and bitten into the flange, leaving slackAnswer
  3. Move the clamps forward, closer to the damage, to shorten the pulling chain and increase leverage
  4. Lower the centering gauges by an equal amount to compensate for any clamp movement

Why that is right

After the initial pull the clamps must be rechecked. They may have rotated slightly and bitten deeper into the metal, which leaves slack in the clamp tightness. Snug the clamp nuts and the clamp-to-rack bolts before the next pull.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A. Releasing the anchors lets the vehicle move and loses the progress of the first pull; measuring is done with the anchors in place.
  • C. Anchors stay at the corners of the undamaged centre section; moving them to the damage removes the holding base.
  • D. Gauges are adjusted for datum reasons only, never to hide clamp movement.
