Getting certified in the auto trades in British Columbia
The written exam is the same one, everywhere in Canada. What changes from province to province is the path you take to sit it — and who you talk to about that path.
One exam, every province
The Interprovincial Red Seal examination is common across Canada. Same standard, same number of questions, same weighting, same paper. That is what the Red Seal endorsement means: pass it once and your certificate is recognised in every province and territory.
The Red Seal exam for these trades
Straight from the published standard. These numbers do not change when you cross a provincial border.
Who administers apprenticeship in British Columbia
Registration, hours, fees and whether a trade is compulsory are set provincially and they do change. Rather than repeat them here and risk being out of date, we point you at the body that publishes them.
What we do not tell you
We deliberately do not publish hour requirements, fees, wait times or whether a trade is compulsory in British Columbia. Those change without notice and differ by trade, and a stale number here could cost you real money. SkilledTradesBC publishes the current rules — read them there, then come back and study.
Certification questions from British Columbia
No. The Interprovincial Red Seal examination is common across Canada — the same paper, the same weighting, the same pass mark. That is the entire purpose of the Red Seal endorsement.
That is what the Red Seal endorsement is for. It is recognised across Canada, which is why it exists and why the exam is standardised in the first place.
We do not publish that, on purpose. Hour requirements are set provincially, differ by trade, and change. SkilledTradesBC publishes the current requirement — that is the only answer worth acting on.
Often yes, with documented experience — but the criteria are provincial and they change. Ask SkilledTradesBC. What we can tell you is that if you are approved to challenge it, the exam you sit is the standard national one, so preparing for it is the same work either way.
Automotive Service Technician (310S) and Auto Body and Collision Technician (310B). Those are the two trades we build banks for. The trade codes shown are Ontario's; other provinces name the same Red Seal trades differently.
The exam is national. Prepare for it that way.
One bank, built to the published weighting, works wherever in Canada you sit the paper.
