When brake linings are replaced which of the following should be inspected?

  1. Camber
  2. Wheel cylindersAnswer
  3. Both A and B
  4. Neither A nor B

Why that is right

The wheel cylinders should be inspected because of the possibility of leakage at the wheel cylinder that may not be excessive enough to see from the outside of the brake drum. Camber has no relationship with the question.

Why the other options are wrong

  • Camber — Camber is a wheel alignment angle and has no relationship to a brake reline; replacing linings does not affect or require checking camber. It is included only to tempt someone into the 'Both' answer.
  • Both A and B — This requires both items to be correct, but camber is unrelated to a brake lining job. Only the wheel cylinders warrant inspection at reline, so 'Both A and B' is wrong.
  • Neither A nor B — This claims nothing needs inspecting, but the wheel cylinders must be checked for internal leakage that may not be visible externally when the linings are replaced. Because B is a valid inspection, 'Neither' is incorrect.

You are using a metric Vernier caliper. The main scale reading (at the '0' on the Vernier) is just past 47 mm. The first line on the Vernier scale that aligns perfectly with a line on the main scale is the line marked '28'. What is the measurement?

  1. 47.028 mm
  2. 47.28 mm
  3. 47.56 mmAnswer
  4. 47.00 mm

Why that is right

A metric Vernier caliper reading 47 mm on the main scale plus the Vernier line marked 28 aligning gives 47 mm + (28 × 0.02 mm) = 47 + 0.56 = 47.56 mm, because a 50-division Vernier has a resolution of 0.02 mm per division.

Why the other options are wrong

  • 47.028 mm — 47.028 mm treats the '28' as thousandths of a millimetre, but each Vernier division is 0.02 mm, so this misplaces the decimal.
  • 47.28 mm — 47.28 mm multiplies 28 by 0.01 mm, which is the resolution of a 100-division scale, not the 0.02 mm of this 50-division Vernier.
  • 47.00 mm — 47.00 mm ignores the Vernier reading entirely and records only the main-scale value.
